Pres. Jonathan Requests Stephen Keshi Returned As Eagles Head Coach

According to reports by Supersports, the NFF has been ordered by President Goodluck Jonathan to reinstate former Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi as the head coach of the African Champions. The president had an emergency meeting with troubled NFF president Amaju Pinnick on Wednesday night and advised that Keshi should return as the national team coach. According to a source:“I can confirm to you that Stephen Keshi will return as the head coach of the Super Eagles because of the presidential intervention.“The president (Jonathan) met with all football stakeholders last night and he told them that Keshi must return as the Super Eagles coach with immediate effect,” the source revealed to supersport.com. 

Supersport.com also asked the source what the fate would be of Shuaibu Amodu who replaced Keshi as the Super Eagles handler.It has been concluded that Shuaibu Amodu would step down, and Stephen Keshi will continue as the head coach,” the source added. Nigeria will face Congo and South Africa next month, and the Eagles must win the two encounters to have the chance of making it to the 2015 Afcon.

Foxcatcher
Complete with prosthetic nose and ratty teeth, Steve Carell gives a “career-changing performance” in a biopic that earned Bennett Miller (Capote) the best director award at Cannes. With its study of a twisted mind, the psychological drama about an Olympic wrestler (Channing Tatum) and his disturbing coach (Carell) has been touted as a best picture frontrunner at the Academy Awards. BBC Culture’s Owen Gleiberman praised Foxcatcher as “a brilliant and darkly arresting true-life tale that fuses Olympic sport and the pathologies of wealth with murder”; rather than featuring courage and heroism, it “grips us with the spectacle of dreams gone disastrously wrong”. Released 14 November in India and the US and 20 November in Russia.


The Imitation Game
Following his Emmy-winning turn as Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch tries his hand as another hyper-intelligent problem solver in what might be the part he was born to play: according to Owen Gleiberman, “he may never have had a role that fits him with the emotionally tailored perfection of Alan Turing”. The period drama tells the story of the British mathematician who cracked the Germans' Enigma code during World War II, and reveals secrets on many levels; Turing hid his homosexuality before being prosecuted by the British government in 1952. Ticking all the right boxes for awards, “it serves up Oscar bait in code”. Released 14 November in Ireland, 16 November in Australia 16 Nov and 21 November in the US.

Claiming to be “very much in the spirit of openness and accessibility that has been the mark of the Papacy of Francis I”, this documentary shows one of the world’s greatest art collections as it’s never been seen before. Ultra HD 4K/3D cameras were allowed to film inside the museums and the Sistine Chapel for the first time, offering an immersive take on works by Caravaggio, Raphael, Giotto and Michelangelo. Expert commentary comes from the director of the Vatican Museums, Antonio Paolucci. Released 8 November in Australia, 18 November in Ireland and 27 November in Colombia. The Babadook
Australia writer-director Jennifer Kent has been praised for combining “subtlety and psychological depth with some full-bodied shock tactics” in her debut feature, which offers up both supernatural suspense and real-life trauma. After Amelia (Essie Davis) loses her husband in a violent death, she struggles to deal with her son (Noah Wiseman); the discovery of a disturbing storybook at their house unleashes a series of events that, according to Variety, “deliver real, seat-grabbing jolts while also touching on more serious themes of loss, grief and other demons that cannot be so easily vanquished”. Escobar: Paradise Lost
Imagining the downfall of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar through the eyes of a Canadian surfer, the directorial debut from Italian actor Andrea di Stefano stars Benicio del Toro as the eponymous anti-hero. Variety described his character as “a cross between Don Corleone and Col. Kurtz”, praising the film for its central performance: “Appearing bearded, heavy and dishevelled, keeping his voice in the low, menacing register of someone who doesn’t have to speak loudly to be heard, Del Toro plays the part as a kind of gun-toting Lear.” Released 5 November in France, 14 November in Spain and 26 November in the US. The Theory of Everything
The second of the month’s ‘geek biopics’, this drama follows the life of astrophysicist Stephen Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne) as he falls in love with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones) – and then receives his diagnosis of motor neurone disease at just 21. Directed by James Marsh, who won an Academy Award for Man on Wire, the feature has been praised for Redmayne’s “inspired mimicry”, which is “acting out of the My Left Foot handbook”. Renowned German director Volker Schlöndorff, who won an Oscar for The Tin Drum in 1980, here adapts a hit play about an epic game of cat and mouse. Adolf Hitler has ordered Paris be burnt to the ground as the German army retreats in August 1944; Andre Dussollier (Wild Grass) is a Swedish consul who reasons with a Nazi officer played by Niels Arestup (A Prophet) over the city’s fate. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s a “terrifically performed piece of filmed theatre … filled with twists, turns and underhanded schemes that show how history sometimes lies in the hands of a selected few”. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
After The Hunger Games: Catching Fire became the highest grossing film released in the US in 2013, the latest instalment is one of the most anticipated movies of 2014. Adapted from the third novel in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins, the film follows heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore). The film was Philip Seymour Hoffman’s last and director Francis Lawrence told Empire that he didn’t resort to digital trickery after the actor died during production. “He had two substantial scenes left and the rest were appearances in other scenes. We had no intention of trying to fake a performance, so we rewrote those scenes to give to other actors ... The rest we just didn't have him appear in those scenes.” On general release on 19 November. (Lionsgate)


Leviathan
Written and directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return, Elena), this Russian drama won the best screenplay award at Cannes, and shows a patriarch defending his house from a compulsory purchase. Set on a remote peninsula bordering Finland, it exposes the corruption at each level of government with dark satire and absurdist comedy. Despite its weighty subjects, the film remains accessible, and according to Variety, “the experience feels akin to that of binge-watching a season of a juicy HBO series as our attention shifts among the various players in this relatively expansive, well-rounded ensemble”. Released 7 November in the US, 13 November in Taiwan and 21 November in Poland. (PR)

JONATHAN GETS N98M DONATIONS FROM NIGERIANS TO PURCHASE PDP NOMINATION FORM

The presidency has said that President Goodluck Jonathan has been given a combined sum of N98.165m by many Nigerians urging him to run for president in 2015 to enable him purchase the nomination form of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Special Assistant to the president on media and publicity, Dr Reuben Abati made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday.

Abati also disclosed that the president will pick the PDP nomination form for the elections on Thursday, October 30.

According to the statement: “President Jonathan thanks all Nigerians, members of the PDP, friends, associates, and all groups who in sincere appreciation of the achievements of the administration in the last four years, have been urging him to seek a second term in office.

“President Jonathan is greatly encouraged by the overwhelming outpouring of goodwill and support, as well as the  confidence of the generality of Nigerians in his ability to continue to transform the country for the good of all of its  people.

Boko Haram announces freedom date for Chibok girls

Contrary to many people’s belief, the Islamist militant group, the Boko Haram, has announced that the kidnapped Chibok girls would be released unfailinly on Monday, 27 October, 2014.

Making the announcement on Friday, 24 October, 2014, was the self acclaimed secretary General of Boko Haram, Mallam Danladi Ahmadu, who also stated that the sect’s ceasefire agreement with the Federal Government is still on course.

Ahmadu, who spoke in the Hausa service of the Voice of America VOA, added that the final meeting between the Boko Haram and the Nigerian government has been scheduled for Monday in Ndjamana, Chad.

He informed that the meeting would be supervised by the Chadian leader, Idris Derby.

The Nigerian government is yet to confirm the purported release of the women as at the time of compiling this report.

The recent attacks alleged to be perpetrated by the Boko Haram have violated the ceasefire agreement the sect entered with the Nigerian military.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the Borno State government has trained medical personnel at the Chibok General Hospital, on psychological counseling in order to offer professional services to the abducted Chibok schoolgirls, when they are released.

The kidnapped school girls were abducted inside their school hostel in Chibok, Borno State on April 14, 2014.

A nurse who caught Ebola while caring for a Dallas patient who died of the disease walked out of a Washington-area hospital virus-free on Friday and into open arms.

Nina Pham got a hug from President Barack Obama in the Oval Office at the White House. And outside the hospital where she had been since last week, she got hugs from the nation's infectious disease chief, who oversaw her care.

White House spokesperson Josh Earnest called the meeting with Obama "an opportunity for the president to thank her for her service". But the close contact between the president and the former patient also came as officials in New York tried to calm fears after a doctor was diagnosed with Ebola in that city.

'Blessed'

Pham said she felt "fortunate and blessed to be standing here today", as she left the National Institutes of Health's Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where she had been since she arrived on 16 October from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.

Pham thanked her health care teams in Dallas and at the NIH and singled out fellow Ebola survivor Dr Kent Brantly, who recovered after becoming infected in Liberia, for donating plasma containing Ebola-fighting antibodies as part of her care.

"Although I no longer have Ebola, I know it may be a while before I have my strength back," Pham said at a news conference.

Pham later boarded a plane to go home to Texas.

Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told reporters that five consecutive tests showed no virus left in her blood. Five tests is way beyond the norm, he stressed, but his team did extra testing because the NIH is a research hospital. He had walked out to the news conference with his arm around Pham and later gave her a big hug.

"She is cured of Ebola, let's get that clear," Fauci said.

'Stressful'

Pham stood throughout the approximately 20-minute news conference and was joined by her mother and sister. She read from a prepared statement and took no questions, but she called her experience "very stressful and challenging for me and for my family".

"I ask for my privacy and for my family's privacy to be respected as I return to Texas and try to get back to a normal life and reunite with my dog Bentley," she said, drawing laughter with the mention of her 1-year-old King Charles spaniel. Bentley has been in quarantine since Pham's diagnosis but has tested negative for the virus.

Pham is one of two nurses in Dallas who became infected with Ebola while treating Thomas Eric Duncan, who travelled to the United States from Liberia and died of the virus on 8 October. The second nurse, Amber Vinson, is being treated at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, which on Friday issued a statement saying she "is making good progress" and that tests no longer detect virus in her blood.

Co-tenants of Mr. Ismaila Ladoja, who lives in one of the rooms of a 10-room apartment in Alagbado area of Lagos, have always suspected something unusual was going on between him and his 22-year-old daughter.


Punch reports that Ladoja, who is a bricklayer has always been in the microscopic eyes of other tenants because they all believe he sleeps with his first daughter, Ife, who is 22 years of age. Although no one wanted to bell the cat even when they saw signs that the little girl was bleeding, some of them however spoke with Punch anonymously.

The report which includes lots of accusations and counter accusations, is said to have involved many of the co-tenants confronting the bricklayer a number of times but his denial made many believe that it was truly a figment of their imaginations until they noticed the young girl’s tummy protruding which was followed by bleeding.

“We noticed over the last few months that Ife’s tummy was growing bigger. We knew something was wrong but one day, we noticed that she was bleeding,” a neighbor who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

One of the occupants of the house alleged that Ladoja and the girl’s mother might have colluded to abort Ife’s pregnancy. Making it known why she thinks the mother of the young girl might be involved in the matter, the neighbor said:

 “He beats his wife regularly. The woman dare not talk. In fact, when she was asked about it, she flatly denied the allegations. “Everybody in the compound knew what was going on. So, the girl was kept indoors for about a week. We noticed that she fainted a few times when she was kept at home. So, they rushed her to the hospital.

“We asked the man where he took the girl to but he said she had been taken to a hospital because she was ill but would not disclose where. How can we report to the police when we have not been able to catch him on top of his daughter?

“Sometimes, he would send his other children out of the house, and when we ask the children why, they tell us that their father is inside with their elder sister and had asked them to go play outside,” one of the tenants said.

Although the tenants have not been able to produce evidences to buttress their claims aside from the observations, It was made known that the man was accused of doing same where he was living before he moved to this present apartment he is living with his wife and 7 children.

“It is a total lie that she fainted or was bleeding. She only had malaria which became really serious and we had to take her to someone who treated her.”

When the wife was asked to give the phone number of the doctor at Holyfield Hospital, who treated her daughter. She said her daughter was not treated at Holyfield.

“I took her to a drug store owner, who gave her drips and few drugs. Ife currently lives with my mother. “How can someone sleep with his own child? Is it wrong to love one’s child unconditionally?”

Asked why he took his daughter to hospital and why she was bleeding, the bricklayer said, “She simply had malaria. Truly, we had kept her indoors for some days. It is just another lie by my neighbours that she was bleeding.“After some days and her situation deteriorated, we rushed her to the hospital. We had given her drug for her malaria but it did not seem to work.”

Ladoja who said he could not remember the name of the hospital where her daughter is receiving treatment said:

“God will bless you for calling me. I am really happy you want to publish this because the world needs to understand the lie this people have been spreading about me. Did anyone of them catch me red-handed sleeping with my daughter?”

President Goodluck Jonathan arrived in Jerusalem on Saturday for a two-day pilgrimage to Israel.
