Real Madrid gave their hopes of progressing into the quarter-finals of the Champions League a massive boost when they beat Schalke 2-0 in Gelsenkirchen in the first-leg of their last-16 tie.
Ronaldo and Marcelo struck without reply for the world and European champions as they took a lead complete with two away goals back to the Bernabeu.
After a slow start for the visitors, they were sparked into life in the 26th minute as a Daniel Carvajal cross found Ronaldo unmarked in the middle of the box, with the Portuguese attacker heading easily beyond Timon Wellenreuther.
Schalke came remarkably close to equalising in the second half, striking the bar, and just as the game was picking up for the Gelsenkirchen side, Ronaldo took the ball down the left flank before squaring to Marcelo, who blasted into the top corner from the edge of the box.
